Floods from the floor. Basement floor cracks expose basements to water underneath the slab.

Steps to waterproof a leaky floor crack

When it's necessary to fix a leaking basement floor crack, we at Badger Basement Systems usually suggest installing a lateral line drainage system to collect water from the crack. When installing this kind of floor drainage system, we follow these three steps:

  1. Install a perimeter drainage system: We strongly recommend that your first step is to install a perimeter drainage system. This will often intercept the water before it reaches your floor crack, ensuring a dry basement and eliminating the problem.
  2. Install a drainage channel, starting at the crack: When direct drainage is necessary, we can remove a section of the basement floor and run a line of PVC underneath.
  3. Restore the floor: After the drain has been installed, your waterproofer will backfill with stone and place fresh concrete over the area for a clean, professional look. Allow three days for this concrete to cure properly before walking on it or reapplying weight to the surface.
Mold & Mildew Alert!

Water can also rise directly through the porous concrete of your floor slab.

Carpet or wood installed on the concrete will trap this moisture underneath, resulting in mold and rot. Be sure to seal your basement floor before installing carpet or organic materials.

Are lateral drains always needed?

In most cases, a lateral drain will not be recommended for waterproofing your basement cracks in the floor. Most water that collects under the floor will be taken care of by the perimeter drainage system before the water can push up through the floor cracks.

In the case of serious flooding through cracks, however, creating a lateral line to your drainage system is an easy, cost-effective way to help keep your basement dry.
