Your Basement is Under Pressure (Literally)

When homeowners think about basement water problems, they usually picture a leaking pipe, a failed sump pump, or water pouring through a crack in the wall (I know I did). But one of the biggest threats to a basement can actually be happening outside your foundation and underneath your home.

This fancy schmancy idea is known as hydrostatic pressure. Ignoring any warning signs can turn a small moisture problem into a MUCH MORE serious basement repair.

What Is Hydrostatic Pressure and What is it Doing in My Basement?

After heavy rain or melting snow, the soil that is surrounding your entire home can become saturated with water. As more water collects in the ground, it creates pressure against your basement walls and underneath the concrete floor.

Water is like a toddler without having any safety locks around. If there’s somewhere it shouldn’t go, it’ll find a way in. If just enough pressure builds around your foundation, it can find its way through wall cracks, joints, porous concrete, or the area where the basement wall meets the floor (Water: 1 Safety locks: 0).

That's why you may suddenly notice basement water after a major Wisconsin rainstorm, even if your basement had previously seemed dry.

The "That's Probably Fine" Warning Signs

Hydrostatic pressure doesn't always begin with a flooded basement. Early signs can be surprisingly easy to overlook:

Damp spots along basement walls or floors
White, chalky deposits on concrete
Musty basement odors
Cracks in basement walls or floors
Water appearing where the wall meets the floor
Increased basement humidity
Bowing or leaning foundation walls

...Before we start to point fingers, these symptoms shouldn't automatically be assumed to have the same cause, but they are good reasons to investigate what's happening around your foundation.

A "$mall" Water Problem Can Become a "Expen$$$ive" One

The cost of basement problems varies significantly depending on the cause, severity, size of the home, and repair method.

A homeowner dealing with a minor drainage or moisture issue may need a relatively limited repair. But if water intrusion continues or foundation movement develops, the solution can become substantially more involved. And with the price of groceries these days, I think we can all agree there are better places for that extra money to go...

The bigger cost isn't always the water itself, either.

A wet or structurally compromised basement can damage flooring, drywall, insulation, furniture, stored belongings, and even that family heirloom Grandma made very clear is supposed to stay in the family. Continuous moisture will also create the exact conditions where mold and mildew can grow.

If foundation walls begin to bow, crack, or move, structural stabilization may also be necessary.

Don't Wait for Standing Water (Seriously)

One of the biggest misconceptions about basement waterproofing is that you don't have a problem until you see a puddle.

Your basement may give you some red flag warning signs long before that happens.

Pay attention to new cracks, damp areas, musty smells, staining, unusually high humidity, or changes in your basement walls. Catching the source of a problem early may give you more options and help protect the investments (and that family heirloom) you've already made in your home.

When service technician Bill P went to a home in Elkhorn, he had no idea what an amazing person he was going to meet. He was sent to this home to help the customer better understand her dehumidifier. It certainly wasn't a long visit and Bill was happy to do it. As a service technician, Bill likes all of our customers to understand the systems that we install, and he is great at explaining them.

When it came time to leave, this customer tried to pay Bill for the visit. Bill declined and said that he didn't do anything to warrant her paying for the visit. This wonderful lady told him that she didn't think it was right that he came at no cost to her. Bill left the home expecting nothing to come from the visit until he found out what she had done.

Instead of just accepting the fact that we didn't want her to pay anything for Bill's visit, she decided to donate money to an area school district. This all transpired right around the time that we had some flooding this year and the school collected donations to help the families that were affected by flooding. Her act of kindness will be spread further than she knows and to quote the superintendent of the school district that she donated to, "We are stronger because of supporters like you!"

Applications are open for Disaster Relief Funds in Wisconsin

This year has been one of the worst years that Wisconsin has seen regarding flooding. The rains and flooding affected every part of state and it took communities working together to keep people, their homes and businesses safe. Unfortunately, even with all of the effort that was put in, there was a lot of damage done; some people even losing their homes.

Thankfully, FEMA has stepped in and they are assisting those in need. They will be going door to door in some locations to assist with registration. They will also be accepting applications online, over the phone or at the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center that is open from 9am-6pm Monday- Saturday. If you would like to go directly to the center, it is located at 2413 Parmenter St, Middleton.

Badger Basement Systems Runs Local Food Drive

We are so overjoyed by the response that we got to our local food drive. We didn't have much time and our team did a great job by bringing in food items and getting the word out to their friends and family. The workers at the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry were very excited with our donations as well. Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

Also, every food item brought in was an entry for our gift card drawing. We are happy to announce that our very own Vanessa Lemke was the winner. When we gave her the gift card, she said, "I never win anything!". Congratulations Vanessa and thank you again to all of our generous donors!

Small Businessperson of the Year Award Goes to...Jim Hedrick!

Jim was nominated for this award by Emily Rueth who is the company's Appointment Center and Website Manger. Emily stated in her nomination, “Jim started Badger Basement in 1975 as the only employee. Over the following years, he had hired a few people here and there, some of which are still employed here. Fast forward 43 years and he now employs 52 people with almost all of them living in the Fort Atkinson area. He has turned his simple want to help people into a successful and profitable business that helps thousands of people each year throughout WI and northern IL. He also has his 3 children in line to take over the business when he retires. He wants to make sure that we are around as long as our warranty; for a lifetime!

Our community is also very important to Jim. He wants to make sure that his employees and community know that they can trust us and count on us to support them. He likes to donate to as many charities as he can and get out in the community whenever possible. Jim is the biggest supporter of this and makes sure we get out and show our support to our community.”

Jim is really a one of a kind man and he improves the lives of those around him. He absolutely deserves this award and was very humbled in receiving it.

Badger Basement Receives BBB Torch Award for Ethics

We were so honored to have been chosen as a recipient of the 2018 BBB Torch Award for Ethics. When Emily started the application process, she was amazed at how in depth it was. It was great for her to do so much research on what the company was like prior to her starting here in 2011 and going back to the very beginning when it all started. We have always prided ourselves on how we are as a business, being a company that our city can count on and employing the best and most responsible people. These types of things are often overlooked, but thanks to the BBB, those are exactly the things that companies are being honored for.

The judges have a list of 6 criteria that must be met in order to be considered for the award. They are looking at things like what types of obstacles had to be overcome, how you teach your team to always do the right thing, and if your leadership practices are meeting the company’s expectations. Although sales will obviously show how your company is doing in a business sense, it will not show how you are doing in the eyes of the community, in the people that you help and with your employees. We have found that if the inner core of your company is happy, then everything else will be better not only for the business, but for their lives outside of work as well.

Our goal will remain the same which is to be the best waterproofing and foundation repair company in our area. We work every day to redefine our industry and we will continue to work at being the best that we can be with the happiest and most well trained employees!

Another SupportsWorks Conference That Doesn't Disappoint

With 14 Badger Basement Systems employees in attendance, we were happy to accept two awards at the 2018 SupportWorks Conference in Omaha, NE. We were among 100's of other SupportWorks dealers, some who also walked away with awards.

The 3 day conference focuses on additional training, new products and all the support that the dealers could ask for. After 3 days of sessions and trainings, we are ready to let loose and enjoy an "Epic" party that the SupportWorks group puts on. This is a great time to really have a chance to talk to all the other dealers and really get to know one another.

We brought home with us 2 awards; #9 Dealer for PowerBrace and #50 for Foundation Division. We were among some incredible people and amazing stories of success.

None of this would be possible without the hard work of our staff, the amazing dealer support that we receive and of course, our customers that keep us wanting to be better every day!

Boys and Girls Club Charity Drive

On Nov 14^th we started collecting items for the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Atkinson. Thanks to Alicia Norris, Club Director, we were given a wish list to work off of. We had the list posted on our website, FB page and one was given to every employee. Although we had no outside donations, our employees really came through! There were several mornings that we would come in and there were more gifts in the collection bin and we still have no idea who brought them….it must have been Santa! We also had cash donations which were used to purchase more items for the drive.

We had 4 employees deliver the bins on Dec 20^th during the Boys and Girls Club Christmas party at a local elementary school. The children were so excited and were thanking us for bringing them gifts.

We choose a new recipient each year for our Christmas Charity Event and this one was very special. They are a special group and we are very happy that we could help bring smiles to their little faces!

Badger Basement Systems walks away with 3 Awards!

For the first ever SupportWorks Convention in Omaha NE, we sent 11 employees to represent Badger Basement Systems, Inc. SupportWorks is the largest network of foundation repair companies across the United States and Canada.

During this 3 day event, we attended classes, learned about new products and attended the awards ceremony. We were very pleased to hear that we won not 1, not 2, but 3 different awards! Out of hundreds of dealers, we were the number 45 dealer! That is a huge compliment to us especially since due to Wisconsin weather, we are unable to do a lot of foundation repair during the winter. We also brought home the award for 21st place in the Concrete Division. That includes the PolyLevel System as well as the Concrete Protection System. Our final award was 5th place for the top PowerBrace Dealer. The PowerBrace is a zinc-plated steel beam system that has been designed to not only stabilize the wall but is adjustable, to over time, potentially straighten your wall.

We are so proud of all of these awards! Our employees came back feeling refreshed, inspired, educated and excited to share all of the knowledge that we came home with!

Bill Peterson Gave it his All!

Bill Peterson has been with Badger Basement Systems for 3 ½ years, and was the winner of the “Give It Your All” program for the service department. As part of this accomplishment, Bill was given the task of picking a charitable organization to which Badger Basement Systems Inc. will donate $500.00. Bill had the unique experience recently, of volunteering for a week with the Glenmary Home Missioners at Joppa Mountain in Tennessee. Glenmary Home Missioners is a Catholic society, who is dedicated to serving the spiritual and material needs of poverty stricken individuals living throughout the Appalachia and in the south. Bill’s work, during the week he was there, consisted of providing his construction skills to help build small cabins in which mission volunteers stay in while they are providing volunteer/mission work and time to the program. In listening to Bill Peterson talk about his unique experience with the mission work, it is obvious that it had a very large impact on him spiritually. Glenmary Home Missioners pamphlet states their “goal is to broaden volunteers’ understanding of the causes of poverty, oppression and injustice—and how their life choices can impact these issues.” It is our honor to donate $500.00 to the cause of the Glenmary Home Missioners, in the name of Bill Peterson.

During his stay there, Bill was fortunate enough to get to spend some time with a local store owner who is also a Master Potter. People from all over, including some famous people, have sought him out for his work. Bill was amazed by what outstanding people he had the pleasure to meet. He told us that in many ways, this was a life changing experience for him. We are so proud of the work that Bill did while he was there and the impact that his donation will make to this great organization.

A Fort Atkinson company is among six family businesses honored at the 13th annual Wisconsin Family Business of the Year Award banquet held Thursday evening at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison.

Badger Basement Systems received the Grand Award for a medium-sized company with 50-99 employees.

“Family business leaders focus on the next generation, not the next quarter,” stated Julie Bogle, lead partner in the family business practice at Smith & Gesteland, the award founding sponsor.

“They tend to embrace strategies that put customers and employees first and emphasize social responsibility,” she said. “They continue to act as leaders in their communities. We love recognizing the wonderful things they have done in Wisconsin.”

Fifteen companies were nominated for the awards, with the winners selected by an independent panel of judges.

In honoring Badger Basement Systems, the presenter noted that back in 1975, when Jim Hedrick couldn’t find anyone to fix the water problem in his basement, he decided to fix it himself. Then he wondered about all the other people who must have basement problems, and he got an idea.

“That idea became his business, and since that time he has repaired over 20,000 basements,” the presenter said. “Along the way, he has received many customer service awards and the loyalty of both employees and the community.”

While Badger Basement Systems began as a small waterproofing company, it has grown to include crawl space and foundation repair, and basement finishing as well.

The judges especially noted three things: The company’s top rating by both the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List; the stellar reputation of the business in its home community; and a third generation now learning the ropes to carry the business into the future, the presenter said.

Jim and Darlene Hedrick’s three children, Mary, Becky and Chris, began coming to the shop when they were young and now they are becoming owners through a succession plan. Grandchildren are already learning about the business.

To receive an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and the Super Service Award from Angie’s List in a service industry is a rare accomplishment, but Badger Basement Systems also receives top ratings from its staff.

“Employees know that the Hedricks care about them and treat them as family,” the presenter said. “As one employee noted in the nomination, ‘It takes one meeting with the Hedrick family to feel right at home. You know their children and grandchildren by name and they know the same about you.’

“Badger Basement Systems has such a good reputation in their community that they never have trouble finding people to hire,” the presenter added. “Employee referrals provide a long list of potential new members of the business’ family. The company gives back to the community as well, contributing to many charities, fundraisers and special causes.”

Badger Basement Systems hosts company meeting at the Fort Atkinson Club

On Friday, May 6^th, we closed the office for a few hours and had a company wide meeting at the beautiful Fort Atkinson Club. The meeting was titled “All Hands” discussing how it takes “all hands” in all departments to provide the best possible service to our valued customers. Once we wrapped up lunch, it was time to learn more about how we can improve and continue our “WOW” Service program.

After Jim went over our Mission Statement and opening discussion, Mary and Becky rolled out a new incentive program to all employees called “Give it Your All”. This program is focusing on attendance, performance and most importantly, customer satisfaction. The winning team member receives a hefty amount of money donated to a charity of their choice along with other great prizes.

Our goal is to be the best basement waterproofing and repair company and to GIVE IT OUR ALL. We continually train our employees on how to make that happen. I think it is working out really well! We have a couple of different options for our customers to leave feedback about their visit with us and our company. I am happy to announce that it is has worked out really well and the reviews have been pouring in.

Once our lunch and meeting was complete, everyone went outside for group photos. Being Wisconsin you just never know what kind of weather you will get. We couldn’t have been any luckier on this day! It was in the 80’s, sunny and simply beautiful. The Fort Atkinson Club is located right on the river so the scenery was amazing! We couldn’t have planned this day any better.

Our meeting was designed to inspire and motivate our team and we did just that! Everyone left feeling refreshed, re-energized and ready to help! I suppose the sundae bar and mid-day bowling may have helped with that too!

Badger Basement Systems Provides Training Site for Local Fire and Rescue Squad

On this 9/11 Anniversary Date, we remember all the brave men and women that lost their lives to the heartbreaking terrorist attacks that occurred twelve years ago. Badger Basement Systems Inc. recently provided our facility to the Fort Atkinson Fire Department & Rescue Squad for a training. The training was held with the "Flight For Life" rescue helicopter service.

The department did landing zone training in the parking lot and held a sit down presentation in our shop area. Due to a real-life emergency, the rescue helicopter was unable to actually land in our parking lot as scheduled. We hope this event is rescheduled in the future. Badger Basement Systems proudly employs the following members of the FAFD Fire/Rescue Squad: Lieutenant Nick Rueth, Lieutenant Robbie Allard, Lieutenant Chris Glasenapp, Motor Pump Operator Aaron Underwood, Motor Pump Operator Jim Chase, and Firefighter Nate Lawrence.

Badger Basement Systems was recently honored at the Annual Team Basement Systems Convention, a gathering of dealers from across the United States, Canada and the UK.

The annual convention is held each year at Basement Systems headquarters in Seymour, Conn. and the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Conn. The three day event brings together dealers in the international network for training, seminars, networking, vendor and team building events, and a celebration of achievements.

This year, Badger Basement Systems was proud to receive three awards at the Team Basement Systems International Convention.

The high-powered event featured best-selling author and motivational speaker Aron Ralston. His book, Between A Rock And A Hard Place, was turned into the critically-acclaimed movie titled 127 Hours starring James Franco. Ralston moved the crowd with his inspirational story of survival and posed for pictures afterwards with attendees.

Google also had a presence at this spectacular event. Two Google representatives delivered a behind-the-scenes peek at how to best utilize the search engines tools for successful business results.

Close to eleven hundred people attended the annual Basement Systems Convention this year, which is the highest attendance to date. The flagship event is held each August in Connecticut.

2012 Basement Systems Dealer Convention Yields Awards

Badger Basement Systems was recently honored at the Annual Team Basement Systems Convention, a gathering with close to 1,000 dealers from all over the United States, Canada and the UK.

The annual convention is held each year between Seymour, CT, (Basement Systems headquarters) and Hartford, CT, and brings together dealerships of the international network for training, seminars, networking, celebration, vendor and team building events.

This year Badger Basement Systems received 4 awards at the Team Basement Systems International Convention. March 17 is sure to be a lucky day for Dorothy Gottschalk of Watertown, WI. Fifteen years ago Jim Hedrick, President of Badger Basement Systems Inc., provided her a free basement waterproofing estimate. At that time, Dorothy knew she needed to waterproof her basement but, like many home owners, it simply did not fit into her budget. Over the past fifteen years Dorothy has dealt with a wet basement, never being able to store family heirlooms downstairs or finish her basement due to constant water damage concerns. While she knew her basement may never be waterproofed she never lost hope.

With spring rains coming, Dorothy was desperate for an affordable solution to her wet basement. She wrote Jim a letter and included the original proposal from 1996, in near mint condition. In her letter she states, “….I was not able to have it done at that time and probably won’t now, unless I win the lottery. Would you please send me a new estimate?”

She mailed the letter to the address listed at the top of her proposal, which was Jim’s office in 1996. Due to continual business growth and development he moved out of this office in 2000. Fortunately for Dorothy, Jim’s first office was in the home he still resides in; her letter was safely delivered to his front door.

Jim was honored that she remembered Badger Basement Systems after so many years and impressed she still had the original proposal. He sent a response back stating, “Since you have kept us in mind for the past 15 years we will honor the price you have from 1996.” A few days later a signed copy of the “new estimate” was received along with a deposit check. Dorothy stated, “I am quite overwhelmed and grateful to you for the “new” proposal.” Her basement is scheduled to be completed on March 18, just in time for the rainy season.

Whether on the job or in the office an emergency situation can arise - because of this Badger takes the time to train our employees to react accordingly. During a weekly production meeting the Badger Crew received instructions on using a fire extinguisher to safely put out a fire. Even the office staff got in on the action. Mary and Stephanie both took a turn and were surprised how quickly the fire went out and how easy it was.
