Badger Basement Systems is again sponsoring the Middleton Fire Department in the Fight for Air Climb. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 17 at the U.S. Bank Center in Milwaukee, WI. This is the third year in a row Badger Basement Systems has sponsored the Middleton Fire Department.

During this event participants compete in a vertical climb up 1,034 steps to the top of the U.S. Bank Center. The event is opened to individuals and teams, including opportunities for companies, police departments and fire departments.

The Middleton Fire Department enrolled in the Fire Department Challenge, meaning they will climb in full gear. Equipped with their official firefighter gear including helmet, mask, suit, boots and tank, they will complete the 47 floor climb.

The climb is sponsored by the American Lung Association to raise funds for life saving education, research and advocacy to help find a cure for lung disease.

Crawl Spaces and New Construction

A contractor will choose to install a crawl space instead of a basement in order to minimize the construction costs. With this mentality, they will look for other inexpensive ways to build the home, while still following local building codes.

Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week

This year the State of Wisconsin has declared April 11-15 Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week.

It is hard to think of severe storms and tornados when we are still wearing winter coats and seeing snow in the forecast. However, with recent storms and tornados in Florida we are reminded how unpredictable and dangerous they can be.

Wisconsin on average has 21 tornados per year, most commonly from May-August. In 2008, the state saw a total of 38 tornados, including one in Kenosha County on January 7^th. Since storms and tornados can strike at any time, with little to no warning, the best time to prepare is before they happen.

On Thursday, April 14^th the state will be conducting mock fire drills. Use this time to discuss an emergency plan with your family. Flooding Predicted in Central Wisconsin

Forecasters say the big melt will begin in earnest later in the week, and into the weekend. High temperatures will be in the 50's the next couple days in much of Wisconsin, and in the 60's in the south on Thursday. The Weather Service says ice jams will also become an increasing threat on rivers-and-streams. The flood risk for the Mississippi River valley is the most severe in a decade. And officials in neighboring Minnesota are working to get ready. Democratic Governor Mark Dayton was scheduled to meet today with local emergency officials in Mankato and in Winona - where the Mississippi was at its flood stage this morning. Other locations on the Mississippi are a foot-or-two below their flood stages today - and they're up to three-feet below flood stages in west central Wisconsin.

Local Company Completes Job in Cambridge Fifteen Years in the Making

March 17 is sure to be a lucky day for Dorothy Gottschalk of Watertown, WI. Fifteen years ago Jim Hedrick, President of Badger Basement Systems Inc., provided her a free basement waterproofing estimate. At that time, Dorothy knew she needed to waterproof her basement but, like many home owners; it simply did not fit into her budget. Over the past fifteen years Dorothy has dealt with a wet basement, never being able to store family heirlooms downstairs or finish her basement due to constant water damage concerns. While she knew her basement may never be waterproofed she never lost hope.

With spring rains coming, Dorothy was desperate for an affordable solution to her wet basement. She wrote Jim a letter and included the original proposal from 1996, in near mint condition. In her letter she states, "...I was not able to have it done at that time and probably won't now, unless I win the lottery. Would you please send me a new estimate?"

She mailed the letter to the address listed at the top of her proposal, which was Jim's office in 1996. Due to continual business growth and development he moved out of this office in 2000. Fortunately for Dorothy, Jim's first office was in the home he still resides in; her letter was safely delivered to his front door.

Jim was honored that she remembered Badger Basement Systems after so many years and impressed she still had the original proposal.
